South Africa travel experiences ?

hi there Am thinking of going to SA as I have a friend working in Pretorria and quite like the idea of going to Cape Town- wineland Garden route then onwards to Australia/Asia. I've never done the backpacker independent travel thing and given some of the stories you read about SA unsure how safe/practical it would be for a single, female traveller to visit (am in my late 20s) - i could just get a 5 day break in Cape Town with BA/Quantas though would like to go to game reserve and Stellenbosch, usual touristry stuff and as i dont drive unsure if this is possible. Would love to hear from anyone whose visited the country what your experiences were, which travel operator you went with etc if you are South African and planning to go home between 20th Feb-20th March 2008 or another female in a similar situation interested in going to SA and fancy a travel buddy etc please get in touch! thanks!
